How's Your Posture?
We will spend a few weeks as a church family focusing on our posture towards culture because there just seems to be ‘so much culture’ out there these days. More than normal maybe; like there’s a thick culture stew that we are trudging our way through and it’s hard to remove ourselves from it!
In this first message in a 3 part series we look at the difference between our Posture towards culture, and 4 gestures we might have as we engage a part of culture.
Scriptures:
Whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable — if anything is excellent or praiseworthy — think about such things. — Philippians 4:8
As Isaiah declared:
‘To whom will you compare Me? Or who is My equal?’ says the Holy One. — Isaiah 40:25
As Moses announced:
Who among the gods is like You, Lord? Who is like You — majestic in holiness? — Exodus 15:11
As the Psalms proclaim!:
Who in the skies is comparable to the Lord? Who among the sons of the mighty is like the Lord? — Psalm 89:6
As the suffering and wise Job declared:
Consider the work of His hands. But ask the animals, and they will teach you, or ask the birds of the air, and they will tell you. Speak to the earth, and it will teach you, or let the fish of the sea tell you. Every one of these knows that the hand of the Lord has done this. The life of every creature and the breath of all people are in God’s hand. — Job 12:7-10
Questions for Reflection:
1. When do you find you have used each of the gestures of Condemn, Critique, Copy, and Consume. Come up with some personal examples for yourself?
2. Are any of the gestures we talked about this morning overwhelming your ability to have a conscious healthy relationship with culture, and threatening to be a posture for you?
